Herbal hair loss remedies

If taking pills such as Procerin or Propecia does not appeal to you, you may want to consider Advecia.

Advecia is a nutritional supplement, marketed for the prevention of hair loss. Whilst there are countless pills, both herbal and non-herbal, that claim to prevent hair loss, Advecia was of particular interest to HIS Hair Clinics due to the inclusion of the saw palmetto hair loss ingredient, a berry that offers well documented benefits for hair loss sufferers.

Both diet and nutritional supplementation can provide a positive influence on hair growth and hair health, whilst deficiencies of specific nutrients can actually promote a loss of hair.

There is no doubt that an adequate intake of nutrients, whether or not this is supported by a supplement program, is advantageous for hair health. However, Advecia’s synergistic blend takes nutritional application one step further, by including specific vitamins for hair loss that are not easily obtained from dietary sources alone.

Hair Loss Shampoos

Revivogen is a branded shampoo and conditioner made from natural ingredients marketed for the prevention of hair loss. Like all of the other natural products for hair loss, Revivogen is not FDA approved.

There are no strict regulations for natural products so it is difficult to know for sure how effective a natural product is, however Revivogen is a well known, established brand name and many people claim to have experienced benefits through its use.

Temporary Concealers

Temporary concealers such as DermMatch and Toppik are not natural hair loss treatments, in the strictest sense. They are however, non-invasive, and do not require pills or potions, or any form of medical intervention.

DermMatch for example, is an instant hair loss concealer. The product looks very similar to make-up and even uses the same applicators.

DermMatch powder clings to existing hair, making it look fuller and thicker, and is therefore only suitable for those who still have a certain amount of hair on their heads. DermMatch also colours the scalp to match your hair colour.

During your search, you will have inevitably come across a huge range of hair transplant clinics, each fundamentally offering the same service, although the expertise offered from one clinic to another can vary enormously. If the idea of hair transplant surgery sparked some interest, you may have researched further, and learnt a little about the various techniques used to transplant hair from a donor site to the scalp.

Most recipients of a hair transplant procedure will experience scarring to varying extents. Whilst techniques have undoubtedly become more sophisticated in recent years, a significant hair transplant scar is still a possibility. It is important to note however, that despite the potential for scarring, this option is favoured by many thousands of people annually, and in many cases, surgery may be the most appropriate choice.

There are however, non surgical hair replacement options available that may be more suitable if you are concerned about scars. In brief, these options include the following:

In reality, the ‘best hair loss treatment’ depends entirely on the individual, their lifestyle, their tolerances, the extent of their hair loss, and of course, their budget.

For example, it could be argued that hair transplant surgery would be too drastic a measure for some people, if they happen to suffer with relatively mild hair loss. On the same token, for an individual who does not want their lifestyle to be compromised, hair systems may be equally inappropriate.

To make an informed decision as to what would be the best hair loss treatment for you, lets first look at your options. All hair loss treatments can be split into three basic categories – temporary, permanent and supplemental.

Temporary hair loss treatments

This category includes all ‘cover-up’ solutions. By their very nature, they do not provide a hair loss cure, but they do enable the user to disguise their thinning hair. These include hair systems, and temporary concealers such as Toppik, Nanogen Nanofibres and DermMatch.

Temporary solutions do provide relief for many hair loss sufferers. Unfortunately, they are also subject to a degree of social stigma, and can leave the user feeling more conscious of their hair loss, the exact opposite of what they are trying to achieve. Many of our clients have tried temporary cover-ups, and have remained dissatisfied with their hair loss.

Permanent hair loss treatments

All treatments that can be described as ‘permanent’, reside here. The most common solution is hair transplant surgery, however many clients complain of excessive scarring, and insufficient coverage of their balding areas. Whether or not this option is suitable in your case, depends on the extent of your hair loss, the availability of donor hair and your tolerance for scarring. Furthermore, your budget must also be a serious consideration, as a hair transplant is generally the more expensive option.

The MHT^® Micro Hair Technique is also a permanent solution. Whilst it would be easy for us to claim that MHT^® is the best hair loss treatment, again, this depends entirely on your circumstances. We believe passionately in our technique, as it provides a safe, permanent solution for hair loss, with none of the drawbacks associated with surgery, however there are also drawbacks, principly the fact that you are required to wear your hair in a short, cropped style. That said, the style created is ultra-modern, is sported by many celebrities, and is accepted in all walks of life.

Supplemental hair loss treatments

There are drugs available on the market that claim to slow, stop, or even reverse hair loss. Despite a lack of evidence to support their claims, and their well-documented side effects, the promise of a pill to solve hair loss is enticing enough to encourage millions of men worldwide to try them. Such pills include Propecia and Procerin.

In addition, topical lotions such as Rogaine also promise to reduce hair loss. Although it is generally accepted that the benefits of such lotions are minor, or even non-existent in some cases, many of our clients have tried using them. There are also shampoos available, such as Revivogen and Nanogen Nanoguard.

Finally, there are several vitamins for hair loss sufferers, which claim to slow the onset of hair loss. Whilst their effectiveness is likely to be minimal, it is unlikely that they will do much harm, provided they are taken in accordance with manufacturers guidelines.

Other hair loss treatments

In addition to the above, there are alternatives available, which don’t really fit into the categories above. Some claim to be permanent, but their effectiveness has been called into question and cannot therefore, be classed alongside ‘guaranteed’ treatments such as hair transplant procedures and MHT^®. Others are at the experimental stage, and are not yet widely available. These include laser therapy, stem cell hair loss treatments and hair cloning.

As far as your options are concerned, there are a multitude of hair loss products available, each claiming to work in a slightly different way, but all ultimately promising one of the following:

2. Reduction of hair loss

3. Regeneration of lost hair

4. A cover-up for baldness

Whilst it can be tempting, especially for those who are affected emotionally or psychologically by their hair loss, to try any product that claims to work, it pays to learn a little more about each option before reaching for your credit card. Here, we briefly explain what some of the most popular hair loss products claim to do, including links to more in-depth information about each one.

Are these hair loss products any good?

There is no definitive answer to this question, as a hair loss product that may be right for one person, might not necessarily be right for someone else.

As yet, we have not seen any firm evidence of a product that can be classed as a hair loss cure, however hair loss sufferers around the world have each discovered their own findings.

Popular hair loss products

Hair Thickening Shampoo

There are several hair loss shampoos available that claim to slow down, or even stop hair loss. The most popular amongst these are Revivogen and Nanogen Nanoguard.

Revivogen is a shampoo made from natural ingredients, that is marketed for the prevention of hair loss. Very little is known about Revivogen shampoo and conditioner. Several HIS clients have tried Revivogen with mixed results, however the general consensus is that the product may offer mild benefits, but does not prevent hair loss entirely.

Nanogen Nanoguard is part of a vast range of branded hair loss products, marketed by Nanogen, a laboratory based in the UK. The manufacturer claims that the product can reduce hair loss, and recommends that it be used in conjunction with another product called Nanogen Nanogaine. The information we have gained via our clients is limited, therefore it is up to the individual to decide whether they would like to trial Nanogaine for themselves.

Hair Loss Pills

Pills to combat thinning hair are amongst the most popular hair loss products available. By far, the most common is Propecia, a tablet based on the active ingredient Finasteride. Another common product is Procerin, a pill that even claims to enable lost hair to regrow.

Propecia is a DHT blocker. DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone, is a hormone that is created naturally by the human body, and is widely blamed as a common cause of hair loss in men. Propecia claims to prevent the hormone from affecting hair follicles in the scalp, consequently preventing or slowing hair loss. Although there is some evidence to suggest that the product may offer benefits to some people, for many it does not. Propecia can cause side effects in some patients, including erectile dysfunction and a reduction in semen production.

Procerin claims to slow the chemical reaction caused by DHT, therefore providing benefits to hair loss suffers that are similar to those offered by Propecia.

Topical Lotions

Put simply, these products are applied to the scalp on a daily, or twice-daily basis, and claim to reduce or prevent hair loss. The most common products available include Rogaine and Nanogen Nanogaine.

Rogaine contains the active ingredient Minoxidil, and is available as either a foam or lotion. Rogaine is applied directly to the scalp. Exactly how Rogaine works is not entirely understood. It claims to dilate blood vessels in the scalp, possibly improving hair follicle function and in turn, stimulating the growth of hair. Reviews of the Rogaine hair loss product are mixed.

Nanogaine is a topical solution that is applied daily. Whilst Rogaine is soluble in alcohol, Nanogaine is soluble in water, making it arguably less damaging to the scalp. As with many hair loss products, reviews are mixed. It appears that the product can offer benefits, but not necessarily to all hair loss sufferers.

Temporary Concealers

Concealers are hair loss products that do not claim to prevent hair loss, only to disguise baldness, making existing hair appear thicker and fuller. The most popular products include DermMatch, Nanogen Nanofibres and Toppik.

All temporary concealers work in a similar way, coating and extending remaining hair on the scalp to cover up balding areas. The results these products can achieve are fairly impressive, however they do not provide a long term solution for those suffering advanced hair loss, because they all rely on the existence of at least a small amount of hair to cling to. The thinner the hair, the less effective they become. Concealers may provide short term relief for some people, who still have sufficient hair remaining.

Hair Systems

Commonly known as wigs, toupees or hair units, hair systems are used by many hair loss suffers as they provide an instant solution to hair loss.

As with all hair loss solutions, hair systems offer advantages and disadvantages. Systems can be expensive to buy and maintain, and are reported by many users to be difficult to live with, as a wig remains in place for up to 6-8 weeks before it can be removed. There is also the possibility of skin damage caused by the adhesives used to hold the system in place.

Hair Transplant Surgery

Finally, one of the most common options is to consider a hair transplant procedure. Hair transplant procedures do provide a solution for many thousands of men, however it is important to fully understand the procedure, and find a surgeon you are happy with, before committing to any treatment.

Patients are sometimes left with a hair transplant scar, or a collection of smaller scars, depending on the transplant method. HIS Hair Clinics commonly apply the MHT^® technique to camouflage these scars. Also, a combination of hair transplant and MHT^® treatment can produce very impressive results. This combination is particularly useful for those with insufficient donor hair for the hair density they desire.

The MHT Micro Hair Technique

The MHT technique was developed by HIS Hair Clinics to provide a safe, permanent, undetectable solution for hair loss. The technique is based around a highly sophisticated scalp pigmentation method, in which individual hair follicles are recreated to give the appearance of a full head of hair, with a close cropped, modern style.

What is DermMatch?

DermMatch is an instant hair loss concealer, often used to cover up female hair loss, male pattern baldness, alopecia and hair transplant scars. The product looks very similar to make-up and even uses the same applicators.

How does DermMatch work?

It works instantly, adding fullness to thin hairs whilst causing small, exposed areas of the scalp to disappear. It looks fairly natural and you can brush it. Does it work?

For what it claims to do, DermMatch does its job very well. We have some reservations about its durability but aside from that, the product seems quite popular amongst hair loss sufferers. Note however that DermMatch (or Dermatch) is a temporary concealer, and does not therefore offer a long term strategy to deal with hair loss. The product requires that you have a certain amount of hair, so if you continue to lose yours, you’ll soon be unable to use DermMatch.

Are there any side effects?

Aside from the occasional allergic reaction, there are no side effects that we are aware of.

What does it cost?

The price of DermMatch varies greatly depending on where you buy it from, and from what country. DermMatch appears to be less costly in the US, but very expensive in comparison in Australia, Europe and the Far East. In the UK a single disk costs around £30 GBP, however it is far cheaper in the United States at around $30 USD per disk.

It is important to note that how long each purchase of DermMatch lasts can vary depending on the extent of hair loss of the individual.

Many of our customers have tried such products, so we thought it relevant to cover them on our site. The most popular brands tend to be DermMatch, Nanogen and Toppik, and usually originate from the US, or are manufactured elsewhere but based on the same idea.

To truly assess these products as a potential solution, we have to ask the question as to why people buy them in the first place. The truth is that the vast majority of people suffering from some form of hair loss are looking to regain their confidence. Until a virtually bullet-proof product is developed, our view is that these products still are unable to guarantee that they won’t be rained or sweated off, smudged off or worse, ruffled off by being touched by other people. With this always being a constant consideration, can these products truly offer an improvement in confidence and self-esteem?
