Young men shouldn’t have operations as soon as they start losing hair, according to one of the country’s leading hair transplant surgeons. He has claimed that some clinics are not doing enough to warn under-30s about the long-term risks.

Doctor Bessam Farjo says he has had enquiries from men as young as 19 but does not recommend hair transplants for under-25s. He is warning men to avoid surgery until they are closer to the age of 30.

He said that while the publicity in celebrities like Wayne Rooney getting the procedure is making it more popular, it is not for everyone.

“When a celebrity comes out with it, you only hear the good things,” he said. “You don’t hear the cautions or the potential complications.”

He says that if you get surgery too young, it can look worse than it did in the first place. He said: “If you have the surgery too early and you go bald, you don’t have enough hair to keep chasing the hair loss. You can end up with isolated patches of hair. You could end up with hairy temples and a bald forehead which isn’t pretty but is also hard to fix.”

Dr Farjo says when younger patients come to see him his priority is to preserve the rest of their hair from falling out before talking about surgery.

“I ask them questions about their family history, record the hair loss and monitor it over a period of time,” he said. I also offer them medication to see if their hair stops falling out. I am then able to have a much fuller picture of how much hair they will lose.”

Jon from Merseyside has been losing hair since he was 20. He says he used to style his hair to hide his bald bits. “It’s a massive blow to your confidence when your hair line changes,” he revealed. Jon is now having surgery at 29 and says he is glad he waited.

Newsbeat spoke to 16 hair transplant surgeons. Thirteen said they agreed with Dr Farjo and would be reluctant to operate on men under 25. But there is no code of conduct or regulation to force hair transplant surgeons to stick to a minimum age.

Other surgeons have told Newsbeat that there should be a regulatory body to stop abuses in the industry and to make sure clinics give people the best possible advice and treatment.

Dr Farjo, who runs the The Farjo Medical Centre with his wife Nilofer, admits there’s no concrete way to stop some clinics putting money before the wellbeing of patients. However, he thinks that surgeons should work together to educate each other and their patients about risks.

Newsbeat contacted Harley Street Hair Clinic, based within the Queen Anne Street Medical Centre, where Wayne Rooney is reported to have had his operation. They said: “Each case is judged on its own merit. Wayne is intelligent and knows the risks.”

It appears Simon Pegg could be the latest celebrity to go under-the-knife and have a hair transplant to regain his hair.

The Mission Impossible- Ghost Protocol star was out promoting the new film along-side Hollywood hunk Tom Cruise.

He was sporting more ‘Hot Fuzz’ on top of his head that looked much thicker and fuller than back at the Star Trek premiere in April 2009.

He hasn’t denied or confirmed the rumours, but it has caused wide speculation from the media as to whether he has come back from his ‘Shaun of the dead’ look.

The British star may feel the pressure of living in Hollywood as his career keeps going from strength to strength in the States. He even appeared to have lost weight on his face as he posed on the red carpet.

Pegg wouldn’t be the first to have the transplant with Louis Walsh admitting to having the treatment last week (see Louis Walsh hair transplant), as well as Wayne Rooney’s famous admittance last year (see Wayne Rooney hair transplant).

Louis Walsh, a member of the judging panel on hit TV show “X Factor”, has finally admitted having a hair transplant, at a cost of around £30,000.

Following taunts by X Factor boss Simon Cowell, the Louis Walsh hair transplant story will hardly come as a surprise to most people. The transplant rumours have already been well documented in the media.

As Louis Walsh, aged 59, was preparing to join fellow judges Kelly Rowland, Tulisa and Gary Barlow for the X Factor final, his thinning hair was pointed out by Simon.

“Simon came up to me and said, ‘You know, you’re starting to lose your hair, dear’. I said, ‘I am not, dear. And anyway, you’re going grey’.”

But Cowell persisted: “Darling, you are. You’re losing your hair.”

The final straw perhaps? Either wat, Louis Walsh finally decided to contact Dublin hair transplant surgeon Dr Maurice Collins.

The procedure, commonly known as FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) was performed in August 2011, and involved taking hair from the back of his head and implanting it in spots towards the front where it was thinning.

Louis said: “It’s called maintenance. It’s not a wig or a syrup of figs or an Irish jig. It’s just me with my own hair, feeling better. It’s like going to the doctor and getting something done to your heart before it goes.”

Fans are unlikely to notice the results of Louis Walsh’s hair transplant immediately. Louis explained: “It takes about a year to fully come through.”

He said he decided to go public after a string of stars – including Wayne Rooney (see Wayne Rooney hair transplant), James Nesbitt (see James Nesbitt hair transplant) and Jason Gardiner (see Jason Gardiner hair transplant) – talked openly about having the treatment.

Many of us are familiar with, or are members of, discount schemes like Groupon or LivingSocial. I get the weekly newsletter from LivingSocial, and for the most part, they’re actually really interesting. Flying lesson for £60.00? Fish pedicure for a fiver? Superb.

Imagine my suprise however, when my weekly email popped into my inbox, touting cheap hair transplants.

http://livingsocial.com/deals/156305-hair-transplant

I’m all for a bargain. Aside from my weekly emails I am officially a MoneySavingExpert.com junkie and a comparison site geek, so its not the discount itself I have an issue with. Its the mentality.

Are cheap hair transplants really a good idea?

Think about it. For most people suffering from hair loss, the decision to undergo surgery is one of the biggest you will ever make. For many, a hair transplant is a hugely positive and rewarding experience. For others, it can lead to heartache and misery. See this forum thread for example.

I worry therefore, that cheap transplants may prove to be exactly that – a cheap substitute for a professional procedure carried out by a suitably experienced individual. Do you believe that well-respected surgeons are forced to offer cheap hair transplants to keep busy? Of course not.

I know that not everyone can afford £5000-10,000 for a hair transplant procedure, and I therefore appreciate why deals like the one above may seem like an attractive proposition.

We all know how emotive a subject hair loss can be, as demonstrated on a daily basis by members in our hair loss forum. It is for exactly this reason that people should be discouraged from pursuing these ‘deals’. Fair enough, if you research the clinics and surgeons available, find the one you feel most comfortable with, then discover that they have a discount scheme, that is a different matter entirely. Just please don’t make a life-changing decision based on a single clinic who just so happen to offer cheap hair transplants.

If you are sure the hair transplant option is the right one for you, do your homework and find the best surgeon you can afford.

Not everything the internet says is true, but let’s see why internet peepz think that our Edward Norton had some “hair work” done:
About.com [...]

Did Edward Norton, one of our favorite (but sadly underrated) actors have a hair transplant, a-la the Jason Gardiner hair transplant story alongisde many other well known celebrities? The internet says he did!

Not everything the internet says is true, but let’s see why internet peepz think that our Edward Norton had some “hair work” done:

About.com said

Edward Norton most definitely has had transplant work done because his hairline in the movie American History X (for which he had his head shaved), is now completely different. He had a receding hairline then and now it’s straight across his forehead. Hmmm.

Bald Outing said:

Earlier photos show that his hair line is a different shape then it is now. Before, his hair line curved up at the sides of his head, now it is a nice straight line across his forehead.

So essentially, its being claimed that he had a transplant because his then-receding hairline no longer looks like its receding. Well, that’s a good enough reason for us. But then again, since the “proof” being presented are just some before and after photos, it’s not really conclusive that he did have some hair transplant. Here’s what our friend Deena says about the matter which we kinda agree with:

Photos are not a good enough evidence to say that someone had a hair transplant because the differences you might see in the pictures may be caused by the lighting, the angles, the head position, and a lot of stuff.

So there. Unless Mr. Norton himself reveals that he did have a hair transplant, everything being said in the internets is nothing but speculation. Anyhow, anyone out there who, like us, are still haunted by Edward Norton’s performance in Primal Fear? Now, that was one goddamn hell of a performance that should have gotten him an Oscar Award.

Whilst looking at various alternatives for hair loss we came across a story in The Los Angeles Times regarding robot- assisted hair restoration!

The technique is said to use robotic technology “ARTAS” to pluck hairs from the thicker fuller part of your head at the back and sides and then move them to the balding areas where necessary.

It normally takes eight to nine hours to individually harvest, by hand, the 1,000 follicle clusters needed to build a full mane of hair, according to Dr. James Harris, director of the Hair Sciences Center of Colorado in Denver.

However the machine is said to be able to complete the treatment much faster with a quicker recovery time according to Dr. Harris who has started treating patients after the robot was cleared by the FDA in America.

Whilst the robot is carrying out the treatment, the Doctor can watch on a monitor from another room to keep an eye on its handy work. The technique uses a special blade that removes the follicle without damaging it.

According to the story, the usual treatment would cost $5,000 to $10,000, but because it saves the physician time, they offer patients a discount if they let “ARTAS” do the follicle extraction.

Before you conjure up images of C-3PO chatting to you about your holidays whilst beautifying your Barnett, the treatment is currently licensed it to only the Restoration Robotics Inc. of Mountain View, California, the company that makes ARTAS.

Whether its making sure they’re wearing their lucky pants, tapping ‘This is Anfield’ sign on the way through the tunnel, or waiting to come out until they are the last one on the pitch, footballers are notorious for strange rituals to help boost their ability and confidence.

But recently we have seen a new more hair raising issue affecting our footballers and their confidence. For in-the-spotlight-strikers Torres and Rooney, perfecting their Barnet seems to have made all the difference.

Just one year ago Wayne Rooney was hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons; sex scandals, speculation for his future at the red side of Manchester and the serious slump in scoring goals. The balding star was slating by the critics with many believing he was past his peak and the spiral of poor form continued with a total tally of 11 goals for the season.

Fast-forward to post Rooney-hair-transplant-gate and we see a different footballer on the pitch. Aside from the improved hair-line we see a striker who makes hitting the back of the net look easy. With 9 goals already including two hat-tricks, Rooney looks set to be a contender for the golden boot to go along with his golden locks.

Fernando Torres was once a hero at Liverpool, the kop would sing his praises and his song, almost claiming he was a scouse, but that all changed when the number nine decided to take a trip to the hairdressers.

His arm-band may have said he was a red, but his lacklustre performance on the pitch certainly didn’t. The Spaniard spent most of his time dubiously getting free kicks and miss-firing shots causing his cheeks to turn the same colour as his shirt. The World Cup was a similar story as he was sidelined for the latter games, not scoring a single goal.

His ridiculous price-tag put more pressure on the striker as he made the trip from Liverpool to London swapping colours en route. His performance and mood stayed Blue as he looked awkward against his former club beginning yet another goal drought. His miss of the millennium against Manchester United and two-footed straight-red tackle left Abramovich wondering why he had spent so much for so little.

But now Torres’s blonde bob hair has returned, Alice band and all, his confidence has grown too. He is more aware and alert, making runs and superb passes, being in the right place at the right time, looking like the Torres we all once knew. His goal scoring tally is slowly creeping up and the only difference is the length of his hair.

Co-incidence?

Ryan Giggs has reportedly had £30,000 hair treatment and he has played consistently since the mid-nineties! Wesley Sneijder is said to have recently visited a Hair Transplant clinic and is said to be very happy with the results
Above all, their hair has begun to grow again and, with it, like Wayne Rooney after his Harley Street transplant, their confidence has been restored.
