Fresh off the UFC upset heard ‘round the world, Holly Holm’s victory of the once invincible Ronda Rousey has the fight community a-buzz, but they’re not the only ladies in the fight game making headlines.
While titles haven’t exchange hands for either of these young up-and-comers (yet), two of the UFC’s brightest stars in the women’s division recently announced and showed off a new shaved hair style.
For Rose Namajunas and Paige VanZant both have decided to cut the hair, one for utilitarian reasons for training and the other raise money for cancer research.
THE DRIVING FORCE
Namajunas first entered the public eye largely due in part to her participation in the The Ultimate Fighter show, where she lost in the finals but won fight bonuses for ‘performance of the season’ and ‘fight of the season’, respectively. She got back in the win-column with a victory over fellow TUF alum Angela Hill.
But shortly after the fight, Namajunas decided to shave her head because, quite simply, it was getting in the way of her training. Namajunas, a purple belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu, has emerged as a submission specialist, with all of her pro fight wins coming by way of submissions. And for those who train BJJ may know, that having long hair, especially at the length Namajunas had previously, can impede one’s escape efforts from various submissions.
But long hair can be an issue not just for the ground game, but the striking too. It’s not all that uncommon to see both men and women fighters with long hair seem distracted when the braids or pony-tail come undone. And if you’re paying more attention to hair in your face, instead of the fighter in your face, you can end up on the wrong side of beat down. Coincidently, Namajunas is set to fight another rising star in the women’s division of the UFC against a young fighter named Paige VanZant on December 10th who is also gearing up to shave her head as well.
What is VanZant waiting for? $10,000.
That’s right, for $10,000 VanZant will shave her head and all the proceeds raised will go to a cancer organization called Cancer Train. The organization uses all the proceeds and donates them “…to help pay for bills, surgeries, doctor visits, and day-to-day essentials that you and I don’t even think twice about.”
VanZant is pretty active on social media, so for when her trip to the chopping block happens, you’ll find it there. But in the meantime, check out what VanZant would like with the shaved head:

Both women show the wide range of benefits for why one would shave their head. What about you? If you already shave your head, what was your motivation. If you haven’t yet, would $10,000 for charity be enough motivation?
