Hair Systems & MHT®
In theory, hair systems provide the perfect answer to hair loss. Hair systems, also known as hair units, wigs, toupees or hairpieces, enable the hair loss sufferer to instantly cover their hair loss, with no surgery and no drugs.
Unfortunately for many hair system users, they find the social, financial and maintenance issues difficult to live with. Certainly, most hair system users would agree that if a solution were available that did not require a hair transplant procedure, they would seriously consider it as an alternative. On the other hand, many people have used hair systems for years and are quite happy to continue doing so.
Living with a hair system
There are many advantages and disadvantages associated with using hair systems as a solution for hair loss, however it is important to note that the pros and cons do not apply to everyone. As with all options available to hair loss sufferers, the right solution depends on the individual and their circumstances.

The social stigma
Despite modern society being more tolerant than it used to be, hair systems is still perceived by some people as an object of amusement and ridicule. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to change in the short term, therefore users simply hope that no-one finds out that they wear one. This often leads to the wearer suffering from anxiety, resulting in a general lack of confidence.
Ongoing maintenance
Hair system clients generally have to revisit a clinic every 2–4 weeks for a refusion. This involves the company removing the hair system, cleaning the scalp, cutting the hair and placing a second system on the scalp using adhesives.

Freedom
Unfortunately, there are many social activities that a hair system user would usually find themselves secluded from. These include swimming, exercise and certain sports, in fact any activity that would cause the system to become wet, or the wearer to sweat.
Hygiene issues
Many users blame poor hygiene for finally deciding to remove their hair system. The main complaint relates to the adhesives used to hold the hair system in place, as they often do not allow the skin to breathe, and can result in odours being produced. Hair systems generally remain on the scalp for up to a month before being removed, therefore the wearer is unable to wash their head, or any remaining hair during this period of time.
Scalp damage
More advanced adhesives are used to hold hair systems in place, than were used years ago. As a result, a hair system is less likely to fall off, however the trade-off is that such strong adhesives often damage the scalp. The photographs below show two hair system users who came to HIS Hair Clinics for treatment. When the hair systems were removed, the extent of the skin damage could be clearly seen.

Does MHT® offer a real solution for hair system users?
Yes, however as with all solutions, its suitability depends on the individual. Every option available to the hair loss sufferer has advantages and disadvantages, and it is up to the individual to weigh up the benefits and restrictions provided by each option, to determine which would best suit their preference, and their lifestyle.

Raj came to us after wearing a hair replacement system continuously for over 3 years. As you can see from the photographs, the skin on his scalp had been damaged quite extensively by the adhesive used to hold the wig in place. Following treatment, the redness of his scalp slowly faded away and returned to normal. Raj has also just started posting in our forum.

Nigel wore a hair system for a year before he decided to remove it. He felt uncomfortable wearing a hair system and the maintenance involved didn’t fit with his lifestyle, having to go back to the specialist every four weeks. Nigel also felt that wearing a system was unhygienic and needed a better solution. Following his MHT® treatment, Nigel now posts in our forum.

Sheb was quite conscious of his thinning hair so he bought a system to cover up his hair loss. Unfortunately the adhesives used to hold the wig in place caused significant skin damage, leaving him with a scarred hairline and further skin damage on his crown. Following his MHT® treatment, Sheb no longer uses hair replacement systems and loves his new look. He regularly posts in our forum.
