Temporary Concealers & MHT®

Temporary concealers take many forms, but are essentially cover-ups, designed to make the hair appear fuller or denser than it really is.

Temporary concealers have been around for many years, from old-fashioned ’spray-on’ hair, to more modern keratin protein fibre shakers such as Toppik and Nanogen Nanofibres, and brush-on solutions like DermMatch.

How do temporary concealers work?

Temporary concealers blend and reduce the contrast of your scalp to match to your hair colour, thus reducing the obviousness of hair loss. Concealers are often recommended by hair transplant surgeons to conceal initial hair loss after the procedure. Concealers work by making existing hair appear fuller, reducing the visibility of the scalp, and therefore temporarily combating the effect of thinning hair. Concealers are temporary treatments, and will wash out with regular shampoo.

What are the disadvantages of temporary concealers?

Many users report a significant difference between the results achieved in photographs used for marketing purposes (above), and what is possible on a daily basis in the real world. On the other hand, regular users of temporary concealers get better at applying and styling the products over time, so for many people, this should not be an ongoing issue.

Quality concealers will not usually stain clothing, however many users report that they can be unsettled or removed by heavy wind and rain. This makes their day-to-day use difficult for some people. For a real-life account of a temporary concealer user, read this story in our forum.

The image above shows a former user of temporary concealers, who is now a client of HIS Hair Clinics.

Whilst the aim of any hair loss solution is to enable users to feel less conscious about their hair loss, regular users of temporary concealers often report feelings of anxiety, inadequacy or fear of being ‘found out’.

How does MHT® compare?

Many of our customers have tried hair loss concealers but remain unhappy, as whilst the illusion can be fairly effective, there are many clients who are unable to fit concealers into their day to day routine. We have heard numerous embarrassing stories about users having their head patted, their hair ruffled or being rained on that have exposed to everyone around them that they use a hair loss concealer. This can be more damaging to a persons confidence than hair loss itself. It is a vicious circle that many people become embroiled in.

The images below show another client of HIS, during the removal of his concealer:

Following a consultation, this client decided that he didn’t want to use temporary concealers any longer, and asked us to apply the MHT® technique to his scalp. The photograph below shows the results after just one session:

Following his second and third sessions, his hair now looks totally natural, and this client no longer needs to use concealers to feel confident. He no longer has to worry about the wind or the rain, about his hair being touched, or participating in activities such as running, swimming or playing other sports.
