Could watermelon seed oil help your hair loss?Hair loss affects over a quarter of the world’s population so it’s perhaps not surprising that it fuels a multi billion pound industry. It’s a condition that also seems to attract more than its fair share of home remedies which can range from the downright bizarre (virgin cow’s urine at midnight anyone?) to the more mundane herbal concoctions that are given added credence through a dollop of pseudo science.

Anti oxidant activity

One of the latest “cures” comes from the watermelon, well from its seeds to be exact. You need to purchase the cold compressed oil from the seeds and then massage it into your scalp to prevent hair loss. The theory is that watermelon seeds are a powerful anti-oxidant and will therefore help reduce oxidative stress in the scalp which has an association with alopecia. In reality watermelon seed oil is not going to prevent hair loss though. It may well nourish and hydrate the hair but it isn’t going to stop it falling out if you’re suffering from any form of alopecia. Also, just the physical act of massaging in the oil can help the blood flow to the scalp which won’t harm the hair and may help to keep it looking and feeling healthy but ultimately it won’t stop shedding.

Speak to a specialist clinic

If you’re starting to notice hair loss, maybe thinning or perhaps bald patches and you want to tackle it then you really need to speak to the experts. You could make an appointment with your GP or you could talk to a specialist hair loss clinic like us. There are medicines, such as finasteride which can stem the hair loss or they can offer treatments and procedures which have been proven to be effective such as transplants or scalp micropigmentation. Whilst ultimately watermelon seed oil is unlikely to damage your hair directly it’s unlikely to do much to help your condition and if it delays seeking expert advice then it’s probably best avoided.
