There are not too many women around with a higher profile than Jada Pinkett Smith... so when she speaks about hair loss we listen.

Jada Pinkett-Smith

Jada won the first of her many acting awards back in 1997 when she played Lida "Stony" Newsom in Set It Off. But she had already made her mark with a wonderful sassy performance as Peaches in Low Down Dirty Shame, a role which won her lots of fans and great plaudits. Since then a stellar career has taken in movies and TV as well as writing, directing and producing.

When Jada Met Will

It was in 1994, very early in both of their careers, when Jada auditioned for the role of Will Smith's girlfriend in his smash show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The role went to another actress with Jada considered too short... fortunately that was not how Will saw it and the two became close friends. The following year they began dating and in 1997 in front of 100 guests the two were married.  Their two children, Jaden and Willow, have followed their parents into the movie industry with great success.

No Limits

Not happy with a magnificently successful acting career Jada has branched out in many directions. She has a music company, 100% Womon Productions. A fashion label, Maja, has been going since 1994. She has also published her children's book "Girls Hold Up This World." With her husband she is also a shareholder in the Philadelphia 76'ers. Last, but definitely not least, she is one of the celebrity investors in Lisa Price's beauty products range for whom she is a spokesperson... "To be a part of another African American woman's dream was just priceless to me."

Hair Loss Horror

Jada recently explained that the reason she has been pictured wearing so many turbans lately is due to hair loss. She had been talking on her Facebook show, Red Table Talk, to her daughter and her mum and broke the news, not to mention a taboo... it is highly unusual for Hollywood A-Listers to discuss hair loss, almost unheard of for the person doing the talking to be a woman. Jada said "Well, I have been having issues with hair loss, and it was terrifying when it first started. I was in the shower one day... and just hands full of hair. I'm like. Oh my God, I'm going bald. It was one of those times in my life when I was literally shaking with fear." She also said that doctors and specialists have been unable to offer a diagnosis and her friends are telling her it is stress related.

HIS Hair Clinic

We are massive Jada fans, a spectacular woman with amazing energy. Typical of her to confront a problem in such an open way, and enormously helpful in delivering the message that hair loss for women is a huge issue about which little is discussed in the public domain, and almost never by women of Jada's stature. It is not going to change overnight the quality of the discussion around hair loss, certainly not with a media that approach the subject with all the sensitivity of a 10 year old. But we can only hope it plays it's part in changing the mood music.
