Androgenic alopecia is something which is estimated to affect more than half of men in the world, in fact even a quarter of women end up experiencing hair loss to some degree by the time they turn fifty years old. Male pattern baldness occurs in a well-defined pattern of a hairline which recedes back and hair is loss around the temples. Although the hair loss can occur at any age, some men end up experiencing male pattern baldness from as early as their twenties.
One anonymous contributor to the online publication Highsnobiety, wrote about his experience of how he began to suffer from a receding hair line from the age of twenty two. He talked about how he always kept a buzz cut throughout his teenage years, yet as soon as he noticed his hairline receding he decided to grow his hair out in attempt to conceal the hair loss. When he felt that his plan wasn’t working because of the level of hair loss, he opted for a hair transplant at the age of twenty six.
How does a hair transplant work?
The procedure is relatively simple, it begins with the donor area of the head being shaved and the new desired hairline being drawn with a marker pen. A needle full of anaesthetic is administered to the donor area, followed by the surgeon removing donor follicular units which are set aside for the second half of the procedure.
Once the follicles are harvested, tiny incisions are made into the transplant area and the hair follicles are transplanted. The whole procedure is not very painful and patients are asked to spray the transplant area with saline solution several times a day until the area heals. Hair begins to grow within one to two months and full results are visible within a year.
SMP might have been a better choice
An increasingly popular hair loss solution for men is Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP). The process is straightforward, much cheaper than hair transplants, less invasive and offers a very natural looking result.
For the anonymous contributor on the Highsnobeity website, SMP might have been a much cheaper , quicker and permanent solution for his hair loss if he could live the buzz cut look.
