Many different styles are possible with the SMP® technique.
During your consultation you will have the opportunity to discuss your preferred style with our team, to ensure we have a thorough understanding of the look you would like to achieve. Of primary importance are the appearance of your recreated hairline and side profiles, the colour and shade of your hair 'follicles' and how densely your new 'follicles' are placed.
Your hairline and side profiles
The hairline is usually the first thing you see when you look at a persons hair, therefore it is unsurprising that the first question we are often asked is "What will my frontal hairline and side profiles look like?"
provides total flexibility, enabling your practitioner to simulate whatever hairline you desire. Choose from soft or defined, slightly receded or further forward, straight or widows peak. Your hairline can be as individual as you are, and will ultimately depend on your style preference, age, skin type and tolerance of change.
The following hairline styles are available:
- Soft and broken hairlines for the most natural look possible
- Restoration of your original hairline, for exactly the same hairline as you used to have before you went bald
- Defined hairlines for a stylish and sharp freshly-barbered look
The above hairline options can be applied as a straight hairline, a rounded hairline or you can go for a more aged, receded look. It really depends on how dramatic you want the change to be, your face shape and also your age. In some cases, certain hairline styles suit people of some ethnicities better than others. For example African American men often suit defined hairlines better than caucasian men, although there are exceptions.
The following side profile styles are available:
- Soft side profiles, often left virtually untouched for an ultra-natural look
- Rounded sides to better frame your face and replace lost hair
- Sharp "razored" side profiles for a young and stylish look

A softer hairline suited Ray (pictured above) perfectly. His fair hair and skin tone enabled the areas treated by SMP®
to blend perfectly with his existing hair, to create a soft, natural look.
The client above opted for a medium definition hairline.
Dani wasn't suffering from a major hair loss problem, but after his hairline receded slightly, he decided he wanted a more youthful look. HIS Hair Clinic brought his hairline forward again, and created a defined look to match his existing hair colour and skin tone.
Your hair colour and shade
All the pigments we use for our Scalp MicroPigmentation procedures are developed specifically to our own specification. Depending on your requirements, your practitioner will create a different pigment colour to exactly match your remaining hair.
The above photograph shows a great example of how SMP pigments blend with lighter hair. All blonde, light brown, white and grey shades can be matched to perfection.
The client above required a darker shade to match the transplanted hair from his strip surgery.
The client above needed an even darker shade. The result is a perfect blend from his real hair to his SMP®
Whatever colour you require, from medium and dark brown, to jet black and even red hair. We choose your pigments with a great deal of care to ensure a seamless finish from the treated area to your real hair.
Your hair follicle density
Although the ability to finely tune your hair density without the need for transplant donor hair may sound too good to be true, the SMP®
technique really does enable the client to leave thinning hair behind, and recreate the style you always wanted.
The client above had a reasonable amount of hair, therefore it was particularly important that the density of his SMP®
treatment perfectly matched his existing hair.
After several years suffering from increasingly thinning hair, Dan (above) was almost completely bald when he came to HIS Hair Clinic, so he could have created virtually any style he wanted. Dan felt however, that a dense look would have been too significant a change, and therefore opted for a lightweight, low density style.
Dan opted for our temporary solution
to enable him to test drive scalp micropigmentation, and the lifestyle change it brings. He has now chosen a permanent treatment which will be completed in the near future.
Creating a 3D hair effect with SMP
Scalp micropigmentation, by its very nature, is a two dimensional illusion. The placement of pigment deposits within the skin produces an incredibly realistic image of a full head of shaven hair. However at HIS Hair Clinic, we are able to take this procedure one step further.
The following photograph shows a recent treatment completed by a HIS practitioner. By layering different pigment shades during the course of the recommended number of treatment sessions, we are able to achieve a subtle three dimensional illusion to further enhance the realism of your new 'hair'.

This 3D technique requires a high level of skill to deliver the very best result. All our practitioners are now comprehensively trained to achieve this effect, and HIS Hair Clinic is the only provider in the world with proven 3D-simulation results.

Adding or retaining scars
Many of our clients ask their practitioner to leave an existing head scar in place, or to create a new 'fake' scar within their treated area. The usual position is within the frontal hairline or a side profile, although anything is possible.
Why do clients ask for this? Some would argue that the majority of people have at least a small scar on their head, be it from a childhood accident, a slip or fall or other event. The belief is that by adding or leaving a visible scar, the overall illusion becomes even more effective.
HIS Hair Clinic is able to deliver on virtually any reasonable request made by our clients, including the retention of real scars or the addition of new 'fake' scars. For more information please speak with your practitioner or see this blog post
Choosing your new style
By far the most important consideration when establishing what style to choose is the position, colour and density of any 'real' hair you still have. If a natural appearance is your primary concern, we will usually recommend that we match your 'real' hair as closely as possible, including the position of your original hairline and side profiles. If you are completely bald, there are many more options available as the treatment is not required to match with any existing hair.
It is important to remember that if your preferences change at a later date, perhaps as you get older and would prefer a slightly receded look, your style can be adapted accordingly. Thanks to our straightforward laser removal process, hairlines can be reshaped, shades can be lightened and densities can be reduced. For more information see our Treatment Revision
Further options are also available to further personalise your new appearance. For example we can create a mild 3D effect
by scattering dark pigments over light pigments, or we can preserve or recreate head scars
for a totally authentic look.
Ultimately, it is our job to ensure you are satisfied with the outcome of your treatment. We are proud of our excellent client satisfaction record, achieved by providing each person who visits us with a totally personalised experience and treatment. If you want to do something about your thinning hair, but are unsure what hair density you require, please contact us

A style for modern men
A concern that our clients occasionally share with us, is the requirement (for most SMP® treatments) to wear the hair short, or closely cropped. For many, especially those who have attempted to grow their hair to hide their hair loss, cutting it short may be something of a culture shock at first.
Contrary to popular belief, thinning hair is made far more obvious when the hair is kept long. The cropped style combined with an SMP® treatment provides a clean, modern and desirable appearance for men of all ages.
