Beards have become incredibly popular over the past couple of years, so much so that they have even damaged moisturiser sales. Market research company Mintel has reported that men’s facial skincare sector has been hit hard because of the beard trend. So it got us thinking, where is the beardiest place in Britain?
Top UK beard destinations
While the beard has become a national favourite, there are certain areas of the UK where men are more passionate about their facial hair than others.
London it seems, comes in at first place with 34% of men claiming they even use beard products such as an oil or wash. Next up it’s the West Midlands, with 20% of men admitting they use some kind of beard styling product. Closely behind the West Midlands is the East Midlands, followed by East Anglia, the South West and Wales.
So while moisturiser sales are down, other facial skin care products are on the rise; especially beard products. Around 35% of UK men now use lip balm, while 32% use a facial cleanser.
The rise of the beard transplant
Beards are becoming so popular that men will try anything to get one. Beard transplants have dramatically increased in popularity. Around 45% of men cannot grow a complete beard or sideburns, so instead they turn to beard transplants for help.
In 2013, 4,500 beard transplants were carried out in the UK. At around £4,000 it isn’t a cheap procedure, but it does help those who struggle to grow their own beard. For centuries the beard has been a sign of masculinity, with 59% of men claiming having one makes them feel a lot more macho.
If you’re considering having a beard transplant, it’s worth booking a consultation to find out everything you need to know beforehand. They can be a very effective procedure, but it’s still important to familiarise yourself with both the pros and cons before making a decision.
